One of the most famous monuments in Breda is the 15th century Big Church or OLV Church. The originally catholic church was taken over by the reformed church after the ‘Beeldenstorm’. Nine members of the Nassau family and the first Prince of Orange were buried here.
It’s not just the impressive architecture on the exterior of the building that make this church the most important monument in Breda, its interior decorations and murals are remarkable as well.
Particularly special is the Princes Chapel with its gold leaf ceiling. The ancestors of our royal family are buried.
Because of its valuable art treasures, the Big Church will become a part of the ‘Biggest Museum of the Netherlands’ initiative from June 30th that was launched by the Catharijne Convent in Utrecht. A new audio tour has been made for this occasion to guide you through the church.
Price: € 3.00 (Friends of the Big Church € 2.00).
The beautiful environment of the Big Church can also be booked for various events, ranging between 10 and 1000 people.
The photographer Rob van Esch | Ruimtes in Beeld made a beautiful ‘photographic ode‘ to the Big Church.
The relationship between the Nassau family and the Big Church is illustrated through the use of ten media players. The exhibition gives insight into the Nassau family and the monuments and paintings that make the church’s interior so remarkable.
The influence of the Nassau family on the architecture, painting, sculpture, medieval hand writings, tapestry and stained glass is highlighted in the Ambulatory.
